The “weird uncle”, everyone has one. You know the one I’m talking about. In some families he’s the one that sits quietly in the corner throughout the festivities watching everyone else talk, laugh, and play. In some families maybe he wasn’t invited to the party, but he’s still there. (“hey have you heard about -----?) We all like to “keep up” with him, but no one really wants to spend time talking to him to figure him out, or really get to know him. Maybe he’s done some things in his past that we don’t understand, or maybe he lives in such a way that we just don’t “get” him.
In my family, there are lots of “weird uncles”. I know because I am one of them. But enough about me. This Thanksgiving I have had the pleasure of spending time with my father in law’s older brother. Yep he’s a “weird uncle”. Keith has never been married, and will not hesitate to tell you that he has not always made the best decisions in life, but he carries with him a wealth of insight and knowledge that if you are willing to listen you will learn a lot from. “Interesting” doesn’t even begin to describe him.
Spend a little time with your “weird uncle” this holiday season. Love him, listen to him, see past his eccentricities.

Look at the picture. It's a little blurry and out of focus, but that's the way "weird uncles" are. Sometimes we need an explanation. This picture is a picture of pure love. That's my "weird uncle" picking dog poop off of his daughters shoe, with his fingers! Thanks for the memories Keith!

Again Brad, insightful and special - thanks for sharing! And by the way I know of a "weird Aunt" who cleaned the dog poop off her nephew's shoe - but with a stick, bowl of water and a brush....I knew that was pure love since Grandma, Mom, Dad, or Grandpa never "got around to it"!
Love ya, Mom
Brad, I love this story! And I'm not weird. :)
I was wondering abut Uncle Keith! And Mindy isn't weird, moms never met Keith.
Good words, bro! I have always respected the way you reach out to the folks on the fringe. Your compassion is a gift.
