third of july 911

Yesterday morning my wife Allison and I were sitting on our front porch drinking coffee. Our neighborhood is quiet, and with the lake across the street, when there is noise, you never really know where it is coming from. Sound may be traveling a hundred yards through the woods, or it could be coming a half mile across the lake.

Everything was quiet, and suddenly a lady is screaming at the top of her lungs "get it off, get it off!! Somebody help Please Get it off!"

The screams came from somewhere beyond the woods across the street from my house. Like an idiot I ran directly towards the screams. Through the brambles, brush, and trees.

When I reached the waters edge the screaming lady was hanging off the back of a docked boat, and a man was hanging off the edge of the dock.

My neighbor arrived two steps behind me, and we were able to pull both people out of the water. A few minutes later EMS arrived and took them to the ER.

The couple had docked their boat at their son in laws pier, plugged it in to shore power, and were planning on spending the weekend camping out on the boat. He went for an early morning swim, not knowing that the boats electrical systymn was shorting out in the water. When he jumped in the electrical current started coursing through his body. He was able to shout once. His wife came out saw him in the water mostly unresponsive, and jumped in to help him. We heard her screams.

A day later I can't quit thinking about it. What if........?

In situations like this I tend to be calm, and do what has to be done. The weird thing is I kind of like it. What I don't understand is my later emotional response. I'm really kind of a wreck.

I am thankful that I was in the right place at the right time, but man.. I hope that is the last emergency for the weekend!

CarolinaSnowDay

Occasionally it snows in the Carolinas. It usually starts in the evenings, like it did this time accumulating just enough snow by bed time for me to take the boys out in the truck for a quick ride to show them how to do "doghnuts", or "cookies" if you are from around here. Well I sure showed em this time! I spun right into the ditch, scraping one side of my Tahoe down the side of a speed limit sign, which caused just enough damage for the insurance company to total it! I fear this means I have officially become a "southerner" as I apparently can't drive in the snow anymore.

On the bright side, when it snows down here you can count on everything being cancelled for at least a couple of days. In this case my work, and the kids school were closed for two days. Four inches = Two days off! Go figure.

We spent the day sledding behind the kids school with our neigbor Wyatt.

What fun!!

missionaccomplished

Today is a great day.

Noah was rewarded by his school for making the honor roll with two tickets to the Davidson Wildcats vs. Samford Bulldogs basketball game. Noah decided that since my birthday is coming up on the 6th he would take me. I thought that was a great idea, and since we were celebrating my birthday I get to choose how we get there.

To date neither of my boys have expressed much interest in going for a ride on my motorcycle with me. This may have to do with me telling them how dangerous motorcycles can be, or their sense for how dangerous I can be. No telling.

So Noah and I made the 5 mile trip to Davidson to see the game. On the way there Noah kept saying “this is awesome”, and “I just don’t get it. You have to be 8 years old to ride in a car without a booster, and you have to wear a seatbelt, but they let you do this! I feel like I’m doing something illegal!”

When we got to the game I asked him if he wanted to go to the game, or just go for a longer ride? He didn’t hesitate. He wanted to go for a longer ride!

We went to the game anyway, but left halfway through the second period to take the “long way” home.

I just tucked him into bed and his last words to me tonight were “tomorrow can we go for a ride on the motorcycle again?”
Happy Birthday to me. Mission Accomplished.
